This magnificent ancient city is located in the Anhui province and is well-known mostly for the stunning Yellow Mountains that rise above. Its extraordinary area is filled with natural wonders and ancient history, steeped in the rich culture of China.
So, if you are not a big fan of hiking, you will still enjoy your stay here. With its monsoon climate and mild weather with steady temperatures throughout the year, it has quickly become one of the most favorite cities of Chinese and foreign tourists.
If you are unaware this Chinese treasure, we’re going to explore some of the fascinating ways that you can enjoy all that this marvelous city has to offer!
In the Yixian County of Huangshan City, you’ll find the placid villages of Xidi and Hongcun, both listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These lovely villages are home to the ancient culture and are reminiscent of a simpler time in human history.
Lying in a valley surrounded by green hills, these two villages could not be better situated.
Wandering the streets, you’ll be able to understand more about local culture and the ancient world that created these lovely homes.
The villages, although have undergone a huge transformation throughout the years, still represent authentic Chinese architecture, traditions and the culture.
When walking down the streets of Xidi and Hongcun, you will admire some of the most inspiring decorative wall arts, characteristic pre-modern Chinese lanterns as well as locals who are still wearing traditional clothes back from Qing and Ming Dynasties.
Reaching Xidi and Hongcun is easier than you think. Get a bus from Huangshan train station to Tunxi New Bus Station from where, after approximately 40 minutes, you will be dropped off at the crossroad.
Take a minibus from there and you will be taken directly to Xidi village. In case of any confusions or doubts, don’t hesitate to ask locals. They will be more than happy to show you the way or even buy tickets for you.
Before entering both villages, make sure you’ve got some money in your pocket. Each village entry costs 104 RMB.
This village was constructed during the rule of the Song Dynasty.
Thus, it is almost 1000 years old. Enter Xidi Village by the bridge that stands across the man-made lake surrounding the village.
As you wander its streets, you’ll find over 100 homes that have been preserved, and the ancient water system built hundreds of years ago that still provides water to the village to this day.
Standing at a higher altitude about 10 kilometers away, this ancient village gives off an air of mystery because of the clouds that commonly hang just above the streets.
The homes are well arranged, and the town itself forms the shape of an ox.
Visit the Chengzhi Hall to see beautiful carvings and more items that have been preserved from ancient times.
Exploring Huangshan city is also about indulging in some delicious traditional dishes that you won’t find anywhere else.
Have you ever tasted a smelly mandarin fish or mao tofu? If not, you definitely have to add these two to your “must-try Huangshan foods.”
The smelly mandarin fish might be a bit spicy but it’s full of flavors and aroma, despite its name that comes from the fish having a very smelly skin that will stop a predator from attacking it.
When it comes to mao tofu, it’s a traditional snack of Huangshan, a very tasty bean curd, that you can eat together with fried veggies and rice.
The Huangshan Scenic Area is easily accessible from Huangshan City, and the mountain area is known as one of the most visited spots in China.
When you see the beautiful surroundings, you will know why. This incredible mountain area is full of beautiful peaks and fantastic hikes that you can take.
Ride the cable car to the top for around 80 yuan and start walking. Don’t forget your camera, because these are moments you will never want to forget!
Huangshan City has much to recommend itself to many different types of travelers. If you’re interested in ancient history, friendly culture, or stunning natural beauty, Huangshan City has all of that to offer you!
