As one of the top 6 ancient water towns south of Yangtze River, Wuzhen is located in northern Zhejiang province, between Shanghai and Hangzhou. With a history of 1300 years old, its features include the well-preserved ancient residences of the Ming and Qing dynasties, interconnected waterways, stone bridges, and a leisurely lifestyle. On Nov 19, 2014, Wuzhen was designated as the permanent location to hold the World Internet Conference.
This morning at 8:00 am, you will be picked up at your hotel in downtown Shanghai. Then drive (around 2 hours) to the famous ancient water town, Wuzhen. At present, there are two scenic areas in the ancient town which are well-preserved. Dongzha Scenic Area covers a total area of 1.98 sq.km. It consists of a dozen of scenic spots which are mainly opened for sightseeing. Xizha Scenic Area is located at West Street in Wuzhen and close to Grand Canal. It covers an area of 4.92 sq.km of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. In addition, there are 72 stone bridges in the scenic area which is considered one of the best of all the ancient towns in China. The highlights of Xizha Scenic Area include the Indigo Fabric Workshop, Wedding Museum, Chinese Foot-binding Culture Museum, Hengyitang Chinese Pharmacy, Yida Silk Workshop, Muxin Art Museum, Wuzhen Theatre, White Lotus Pagoda, etc. You can walk along ancient streets, explore the beauty of the water town and enjoy the leisurely lifestyle there. In addition, you will take a rowboat trip to explore the water town.
In Wuzhen, the local people still practice traditional ways and enjoy the festivals, such as visiting relatives in the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival (May 5 in lunar calendar), the Ghost Festival (July 15 in lunar calendar), etc. It’s a good way to understand the local people and experience more traditional life if you visit during these periods.
Lunch will be served with local Chinese food in the town during the trip.
After the tour, drive back to your hotel in Shanghai. Thus, the end of your pleasant and leisurely day-trip in Wuzhen.
