Your Chengde tour features 2 days of enchantment. Small as it is charming, the ancient city of Chengde just so happens to have an extraordinary historical background. It is here where the emperors of the Qing dynasty came to retreat from the hot and at times unbearable summer heat of the Forbidden City (1644-1911). The urban center recorded a population of 450, 000 as of 2009, it's also home to large populations of ethnic minorities like from Mongol and Manchu and is currently an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being known as one of the first iconic and cultural cities of China, Chengde also has the scenic environment to back up its reputation, with other plenty sights, and attractions for visitors to explore.
Day 1 of your Chengde tour starts in the morning right when our English speaking tour guide picks you up in Beijing at your hotel to escort you to Chengde (around 3.5 hours on the way). Once there, we will spend the rest of the day exploring the famous Chengde Mountain Resort, the former imperial summer resort for the emperors. It took 89 years to complete and it covers up to 5.6 square kilometers, almost half of Chengde's urban area.
It is considered as one of the top 4 gardens in China, a breathtaking experience with familiar garden silhouettes drawing inspiration from the gardens of southern China. With a total area of 100000 sq.m. the whole resort has been divided into 4 parts including a palace zone, lake zone, plain zone and mountain zone.
When lunch time comes your Chengde tour guide will set up a local Chinese meal. We stay over night in Chengde downtown.
Day 2 of your Chengde tour starts after a much-needed breakfast, we continue on your trip and visit the Small Potala Palace, the largest monasteries among all the temples outside of Chengde Mountain Resort. It is built in Qing Dynasty according to the Potala Palace in Lhasa and was modeled after the Potala Palace of Tibet, the famous sanctuary of the Dalai Lama, which was built a century earlier.
Afterward, we visit the famous Puning Temple, which perfectly merges the architectural style of Tibetan and Han Nationality. The temple covers a total area of 23, 000 sq.m. It was built in 1755 during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the Qing dynasty. A must-see is its wooden carved and gold painted “Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes Guanyin Buddha”, the world's tallest wooden sculpture of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara standing at 22.28-meter-high and weighing at 110 tons -- quite the sight to behold.
After lunch, we transfer back to Beijing and end your pleasant trip in Chengde.
