Nestled on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is often viewed as one of the most alluring destinations in China.
As one of China's most important cities, Nanjing, a.k.a. Nanking, once served as the capital of many Chinese dynasties.
It is known as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and has also played an important role in China's modern history.
Despite of Nanjing's glory days, China's former capital went through unfortunate lows, leading to its loss in capital city ranking.
In 1839, the Opium War burst out after Lin Zexu, an unflagging official, burnt twenty thousand boxes of opium in Humen.
And it gets worse.
In Xiaguan, the corrupt Qing government under pressure by British forces, signed the infamous Nanjing Treaty, the first of the 'Unequal Treaties' which relinquished Hong Kong from China for more than hundred years.
This treaty resulted in more invasions and colonial rule of the western countries; leaving China in a dark place, sinking into harder times.
But the dagger to the heart was the Japanese invasion, which led to the Nanjing Massacre when approximately over 300, 000 people were brutally massacred.
