Today, spend the entire day exploring the “Water City with Gardens”, Suzhou. You will be driven from Shanghai to Suzhou, which is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive. First on the itinerary is the Humble Administrator’s Garden. Constructed in 1509 A.D. during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 A.D.), it is consider one of the top four gardens in all of China. Originally, it was the private garden of a former government official. Water is the major theme of the garden, and its beautiful scenery includes lush forests, hills and rock formations, pavilions and halls. Next on the tour, is a visit to Panmen Gate, which is the only gate for both the land and water. Standing on the gate, visitors enjoy stunning vistas of the famous Grand Canal.
Lunch will be a delicious local Chinese meal.
In the afternoon, explore the beautiful Tongli Ancient Water Town, which has been described as one of the top 6 water towns south of the Yangtze River. Believed to be over a thousand years old, the town has ancient bridges, the tranquil winding river, and buildings constructed in the traditional Chinese architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Fifteen rivers separate the town into seven different islets. There are 49 stone bridges connecting the entire town. You will also take a leisurely rowboat trip to explore the water town.
After this wonderful tour, you will be driven back to your hotel in Shanghai.
