Day 1 Kunming

Meals: Chinese Lunch

Welcome to Kunming, the capital of colorful Yunnan Province, which is known as the “Ever Spring City” for its comfortable climate and various categories of flowers all year round. It’s the gateway city to Southeast Asia, as well as one of the main centers in western China. In 2016, Kunming is ranked as one of the best places to live in China.

Today, you will focus on the highlights in the downtown area. Firstly, visit the Qiongzhu Temple (a local famous Buddhist Temple), which was the first Buddhist temple in Yunnan. It was built during the Tang Dynasty. The temple is famous for the 500 Buddhist Arhats (Lohan), 68 sitting on both sides of the main hall, 216 in the Tiantianlai Pavilion, and 216 in the Fanyin Pavilion. The 500 Lohans cost 7 years (from 1883A.D.-1890A.D.) by the famous clay master from Sichuan, Mr. Li Guangxiu, and the other 5 assistants. Then visit Yunnan Nationalities Museum, the largest ethnic museum in Southeast Asia, where you can get to know the traditional festivals, handicrafts, arts, and costumes of minorities in Yunnan. It has the widest selection of ethnic clothes among all the museums in China. The basic exhibition including the Ethnic Clothing and the Manufacture Craft, Ethnic Characters and ancient books, traditional technique of production and living, Ethnic Musical Instruments, Ethnic Mask, Ethnic Eaves Tile, Ethnic Arts, Ethnic Ceramic etc. The last stop today is the fascinating West Hill and Dragon Gate, which is famous for its delicately carved Taoist Grottoes. The grottoes were first started in 1781 and ended in 1853, which was organized by Wu Laiqing, Yang Rulan, and Yang Jitai in three different periods. You will take the leisurely cable car up and down the hill. Standing on the hill, you will enjoy the great panoramic views of the fascinating Dianchi Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan. After the trip, drive back to the hotel.
