Shanghai is the center of the Chinese economy and the largest port in the world. The metropolis is world-renowned for its vitality and prosperity. It also functions as the window for foreigners wanting to learn more about China, and a bridge connecting the outside world. Shanghai is a spectacular metropolis that cannot be missed.
Shanghai is located in the plain of the Yangtze River, renowned for the river named Shanghaipu, the branch of Wusong River. In the period known as the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C), Shanghai was under the control of Wu. During the era of Warring States (475-221B.C), some local inhabitants invented the hydraulic tools named as Hu, then called this region Hudu. Furthermore, in order to guard against pirates, the local government built ramparts along the coast, therefore shanghai was called Hu for short.
Shanghai, which literally means the "City on the Sea", lies on the Yangtze River delta at the point where China's 5,500-km (3,400-mi)-long Yangtze River empties into the Pacific. Until 1842, Shanghai was a small fishing village. After the first Opium War, however, the British named Shanghai a treaty port, opening the city to foreign involvement. The village soon evolved into a city carved up into autonomous concessions administered concurrently by the British, French, and Americans, all independent of Chinese law. Each colonial presence brought with it its particular culture, architecture, and heritage.
This evening, you will be picked up at your hotel lobby and transferred to take the leisurely night cruise on the Huangpu River, considered to be the mother river of Shanghai and the cradle of civilization of Shanghai. You will enjoy the stunning night views on both sides of Huangpu River, including the old Shanghai Downtown and the Pudong New District. Standing on the deck, you will be surprised how it could develop from a small village into the modern metropolis in just 180 yrs old. After the cruise, drive back to your hotel.
