This morning, drive to the exquisite “City of Waterways", Suzhou (about 1.5-2 hours from Shanghai). The first stop on the tour is the world-famous Humble Administrator’s Garden. Originally constructed in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the most beautiful gardens in China. It was initially a private garden of a former government official. Water is the major theme of the garden and its scenery includes small forests, hills and rock formations, man-made pavilions, halls and parlors.
Next on the itinerary is Panmen Gate, which is the only gate for both the land and water in Suzhou. Standing on the gate, you will see the famous Grand Canal.
Lunch will be a delicious local Chinese meal.
After lunch, visit the famous Suzhou Museum, which is designed in the style of a private garden. The museum houses over 30,000 cultural relics --- most notable are the excavated artifacts, Ming and Qing Dynasty paintings and calligraphy, and ancient arts and crafts.
After that, visit the beautiful, Shantang Historical Street. The street features the stone-road, well-preserved traditional residents, narrow, lanes and the river.
Overnight in Suzhou.
Today you will head for the wonderful ancient water town, Wuzhen. It is considered one of the Top 6 ancient water towns south of the Yangtze River. Wuzhen is renowned for its well-preserved buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, intersecting waterways, stone bridges, and leisurely pace of life. With a history over 1,300 years old, it covers a total area of 79 sq km and has a population of 57,000 people. You will spend a half-day visiting the attractions of the Hundred Beds Museum, the Traditions and Folkways Exhibition Hall, the Wooden Carving Museum, an Indigo Fabric Workshop, a Wine Workshop amongst other destinations. You will also take a leisurely boat ride to explore the water town. After the tour, drive back to the hotel in Shanghai.
